Did you ever ponder over your sleeping habits, the surface you sleep on and the amount of time you spend in your bed every day? Did you ever stop to reflect on your body's needs for a restful repose so that you become productive, remain healthy and alert? If no, then you are among a majority of populace who want a fantastic sleep but invest little time and efforts in research before bringing a new mattress home.

Importance of a Quality Sleep

Your mattress plays a cardinal role either in assisting you to a better sleep or affecting your sleep, spine, back and health badly. Our bed is the only refuge wherein we spend most of our time while at home, however, regrettably, we overlook the critical significance of a good quality mattress. In my earlier blog A Rejuvenating Sleep: Precious than Our Assets, I had elaborated in detail about the importance and the vital aspects of a sound sleep and its effects on our health and productivity.

Quality Mattress and Spine Protection

Due to our busy schedule and restless work, our back especially our spine gets the maximum beating and therefore, a quality sleep which has all the elements of sleep efficiency, sleep onset latency and wake after sleep onset is required for a greater benefit of our spine as it works hard to support our body and its various activities. Thus a restorative sleep is also helpful in preventing an excessive daytime sleepiness and promoting the pressure points relief. In contrary, a restless and an insufficient sleep abated by a poor quality mattress plays havoc with our spine, back and overall health.

In light of above, it is of paramount importance that you should actively take a due care of your spine and health by having a sufficient quality sleep assisted by a quality mattress designed and developed to support your spine correctly. This helps your body rest in its natural position which promotes the muscles relaxation and blissful sleep. If your mattress fails to support and align your spine in the appropriate way, you may start to experience muscle fatigue and unnecessary excessive tossing and turning in your bed.

Mattress Selection

It is a great lie and a fallacy that orthopaedic mattresses help us cope up with the back pain. A body of research on mattresses technology and the Case Studies have shown that there is no such thing as an ORTHOPAEDIC MATTRESS which helps us manage our back pain. Many companies have promoted their mattresses under the name of Back Care mattresses or Orthopaedic mattresses. The mattresses manufacturers, online sellers or the retailers (small scale or high street) who broadcast this myth to their prospective shoppers do the most insincere service to the public to plump up their revenues.

The mattresses which are scientifically designed and developed for a specific purpose of bringing ease to your spine and back in conjunction with improving your sleep efficiency are worth buying. The design and development of such mattresses need the scientists of high calibre with an exclusive expertise of this field. However, such mattresses need not to be expensive. Higher price does not guarantee the quality and the benefits of the mattress.

Almost 100% Asian British and 85% White British owned companies do not have this scientific and technological expertise and they do not have a R&D Department employing the skilled scientists. Such companies cannot produce a high technological spine care mattresses or other mattress with scientific benefits unless they prove it. Buying a proven mattress worth your money.

Important Points to Remember

Following points are worth remembering before you shop for your next mattress:

• Choose a mattress which can offer you the best of comfort and support

• If you are buying from a shop then try yourself and seek an advice of a salesman there, however, take your own decision

• If you are buying online, then do not buy from the sellers who do not have their own manufacturing company with R&D Department and the scientists working for them. Most of the online sellers buy their mattresses from small mattresses manufacturing companies. These sellers even do not know the composition and the characteristics of the mattresses they are selling online. Stay away from such sellers. There is a possibility that their mattresses are unhygienic and fire hazard. Many companies use the cheap and unhygienic recycled components.

• Always pay a full attention to the firmness rating of the mattress. Your body type, frame and weight dictate the firmness rating. Higher the weight firmer the mattress is required. Try the mattress with your partner (if have one). You have to decide yourself which firmness is appropriate for your comfortable sleep. If buying online, then buy from a highly scientific and technologically developed mattresses manufacturing companies only.

• A mattress which can support your spine and keep it in alignment while offering you a good comfort is a must

• Ask the retailer, manufacturer or the online sellers about the mattress core and its specification. If they do not give you this detail then do not buy from them. Your mattress core is highly important for your peaceful sleep. Do not ignore this aspect while buying a mattress.

• Make sure your base is compatible to the mattress you want to buy. It is recommended to change the base when you buy a new mattress. A good support is required for your mattress for its optimal performance.

Always keep in mind that your restorative sleep is an important ingredient for your health, day to day performance, alertness and cognitive response. A high quality mattress is the one which provides your body and the spine the required support, keeps the spine in alignment, relieves your pressure points and relaxes you from body aches and pains while enhancing your sleep quality and sleep efficiency.
